AI-assisted clinical tool
AI Assistant for Disaster Relief
An AI assistant designed to aid disaster recovery efforts for state residents via mobile SOS texting.

context
Project Overview
The Challenge
Non-emergency disaster relief resources are decentralized and often unreachable without cell or internet service.
The Solution
From complex to conversational: users can leverage iOS satellite texting to support questions on relief efforts.

Final Concept
With a cross-functional team, we designed a mobile experience to support emergency response in non-immediate danger situations, such as locating nearby shelters or transportation options.
This concept builds on an earlier state proposal for a website to help residents access post-disaster recovery forms. However, that proposal assumed residents had internet access, an assumption that breaks down in the immediate aftermath of a disaster, when it's needed most. This approach fills that gap by leveraging iOS SOS satellite texting, which remains available when cellular networks fail, so residents can still locate shelters and transportation even without connectivity.

Expanded Reach in Connectivity Gaps
Extends service to users cellular/data-dependent apps can't reach, especially when shelter is needed
Infrastructure Leverage
Built on existing iPhone satellite technology, avoiding the cost of new hardware or proprietary satellite partnerships.
methodology
The Process
User Research & Ideation
Spoke with users affected by recent natural disasters, turning insights into potential solution concepts.

Competitive Analysis
Solution concepts were narrowed down through research into feasibility and existing approaches, including a competitive analysis of relief efforts and their design choices. Alternative brand communication methods, such as iMessage-based texting for HR, were also explored to inform how users without app access might still be reached.

Figma Wireframes
Based on research insights, a flow of questions was created to guide the prototype's interactions. In partnership with a senior designer, this flow was brought to life through interactive prototyping in Figma, resulting in clickable wireframes for demonstrations.

Telling the Story
A persona was drafted to walk the client through the prototype, giving the proof of concept a clear narrative. As part of this work, I mentored an intern through the process of developing this persona.
